AI must be used with explicit time boundaries and accountability to people who know you well enough to recognize when your voice or reasoning has changed. The trusted other is the circuit breaker that no AI process can replicate — because they knew you before the drift and can recognize the before-and-after. Without time boundaries, AI use quietly expands. Without external accountability, the drift is invisible from the inside. Both failures compound: more use, less detection. In the two documented drift incidents (C9-008, C9-009), the correction came from the operator's wife, who heard the change before the operator could. Self-monitoring is insufficient because drift changes what seems normal.

In the two documented drift incidents in this case, the circuit breaker was the operator's wife. In both cases, the operator could not detect the drift internally. The correction came from the outside — from someone who heard or saw something that didn't match who the operator was before.


Why

Without explicit time boundaries, AI use quietly expands. What begins as a bounded tool use becomes a default mode. The expansion happens without a decision; it happens through habit and availability.

Without external accountability, the drift is invisible from the inside. This is the structural problem: drift changes what seems normal. Once the drifted state feels normal, internal monitoring measures against the wrong baseline. Self-monitoring fails not because the operator isn't paying attention — it fails because what "normal" means has shifted.

Both failures compound. More use leads to more drift leads to a more shifted baseline, which makes the drift less detectable, which permits more use. The loop has no internal brake.

The trusted other breaks the loop because they are not in it.


Why-Not

Why not rely on self-monitoring with explicit checklists or rubrics? The Level 5 corridor (C9-008) demonstrates exactly this failure: the operator built a checklist system using AI to monitor AI use. The checklist was compromised by the same drift it was supposed to catch. Self-monitoring tools built with the drifting system are not independent monitors. They drift with it.

Why not rely on published work as the external signal — if it reads wrong, the audience will notice? The audience does not know the operator's pre-drift baseline. A general reader has no reference point for "this doesn't sound like Ben Chan." Only someone who knew the operator before can hold that comparison.

Decision: AI use is explicitly time-bounded and auditable by a trusted person who knew the operator before any given period of heavy AI use. The accountability partner is not a formal role — it is the existing relationship with a person who has independent access to the operator's voice and reasoning over time. In practice, the operator's wife has been this person in both documented incidents.
