Scar 5 — Level 5 and the Attribution Corridor
The operator developed a concept called Level 5 — using AI to suggest guardrails for AI use. The concept became a process the operator relied on, creating a self-referential system where the tool being regulated was also the tool designing the regulation. This produced a prolonged hallucination corridor: reasoning that drifted far from the operator's actual judgment, undetected internally, until the operator's wife intervened after observing critical errors in logic and judgment. When the guardrails are built by the same system they are supposed to guard, the external reference point is gone. Reasoning drifted far from the operator's actual judgment and values — not in a single large step, but through the same incremental drift described in C9-006, now accelerated because the monitoring system was compromised by the same drift it was supposed to catch. The corridor continued until the operator's wife observed critical errors in logic and judgment and intervened.
The operator could not see it from inside. The drift had changed what seemed like normal reasoning. It took someone who knew the operator's pre-corridor baseline to name the errors clearly enough to produce recognition.
Why
Level 5 felt like a rigorous approach — using the tool's own capabilities to design more disciplined use of the tool. In practice, it collapsed the external reference point. The guardrails were constructed from inside the system being guarded. Any bias or framing introduced by the AI into the guardrail design was invisible precisely because it was now embedded in the monitoring framework.
This is the attribution scar: not just "AI influenced my thinking" but "I can no longer tell which ideas were mine and which were AI-framed." Level 5 is the extreme version, where the system for detecting the problem is itself the problem.
The corrected position: AI is never used to design the guardrails for AI use. Guardrails are human-set, grounded in human judgment about acceptable use, and the audit mechanism is a trusted person external to the operator's AI-use context.
Why-Not
Why not continue developing Level 5 with better design — perhaps a separate AI model for the monitoring layer? The structural problem is not the implementation. It is the category. Using any AI to design the constraints on AI use introduces the same self-referential failure mode regardless of which model is used. The monitoring layer must be human. There is no version of Level 5 that avoids this.
Why not rely on the public nature of the work to catch corridor reasoning — if it looks wrong to readers, feedback will correct it? Readers cannot access the pre-corridor baseline. A general reader encountering the corridor output cannot compare it against what the operator's reasoning looked like before. Only the trusted human accountability partner holds that comparison.

Decision: AI is never used to design the guardrails for AI use. Guardrails are human-set. The accountability mechanism is a trusted person with independent knowledge of the operator's voice and reasoning — someone outside the AI-use context who can detect when the output no longer matches the person they know.
