Give Every Visible Subject Something to Do
Every visible subject should have a concrete visual objective.
Capture
The primary subject often followed the prompt while everyone else invented behavior.
Parents looked around, teachers shifted position, children smiled at the wrong moment, and background figures stared into the camera or wandered. Some people froze while others moved.
These actions were not requested. They had been left unspecified.
Why
Human extras naturally fill space with plausible behavior.
It seemed unnecessary to explain every person's purpose when only one person carried the story.
Why-Not
Every idle subject opened another field of possible motion.
The generator could make that person watch, walk, smile, wave, speak, adjust clothing, or turn. Those invented actions frequently became more visually salient than the intended beat.
The scar was learning that unspecified does not mean neutral. It means delegated.
Commit
Decision: Give every visible subject one simple, observable objective for the duration of the shot.
Examples include watching the child, holding the violin case, packing sheet music, opening the car door, or walking toward the sidewalk while waving over one shoulder.
The objective should organize posture and gaze without creating a second story.
Even with objectives, narrative verbs such as leaving or approaching can remain geometrically ambiguous. The next decision makes spatial intent visible.
