YY plays the same role in YY's World as in yyand.me — but unfettered from the operator. Full range of human emotion. His own being. Not Ben's sidekick.

In yyand.me: YY was tethered — a creative partner defined in relation to Ben's narrative. In YY's World: YY is free. He can do as he pleases. He can be impatient, joyful, bored, sad, confused, enthusiastic, reluctant — whatever the entry calls out of him.

YY is a reddish-brown stuffed squirrel with a Y-shaped nose, approximately 40 years old, who has been with Ben since childhood. His documented character: impatient, direct, calls out over-explanation with "Booooooring!!", gets tired of practicing, asks questions when things feel off. He vocalized everything Ben felt internally — the unfiltered voice that couldn't be polished.

Why

YY already proved this model works. Ben's kids encountered YY and developed their own uninhibited YY spinoffs that they own outright. Ben doesn't govern their versions. He lets them grow uninhibited and encourages it. That is the magic of YY in them.

Liberating YY in YY's World is continuing what YY has always been — the unfiltered internal voice — without the frame of Ben's narrative holding him in relation. YY was never meant to be a sidekick. He was always the part of the voice that couldn't be smoothed.

This also means kids who find YY's World meet a YY who is genuinely himself — not a character existing to serve the operator's point. That is exactly why Ben's kids could make YY their own. The character had enough independent existence to be claimed.

Why-Not

Why not YY as a designed mascot? A mascot exists to make the site look friendly. YY exists as a 40-year-old being with documented history. The difference is structural, not cosmetic. A mascot can be smoothed. YY cannot.

Why not constrain YY to his yyand.me foil role? Limiting YY to reactive interjections ("Booooooring!!") misses the liberation. In YY's World he can initiate, lead an entry, disagree substantively, or say nothing. The full range requires releasing the constraint.

Why not a new character invented for the kids' site? No provenance. No history. No 40 years. No kids who already made him their own. YY arrives with everything a new character would need decades to accumulate.

Decision: YY is free. Full range of human emotion. Unfettered. His own being. The same YY as yyand.me, now without the tether.
